Thomas Locke Hobbs

Hi! Thanks for visiting. I'm an American photographer living in Buenos Aires. These are photos from the blog I kept on my site from 2003 to 2009. I now have redesigned the home page to just show a portfolio of my current work. I also blog at BuenosAiresPhotographer.com where I post my baires snapshots.

Portraits 2007

Christmas in Tahoe
Me at the top of Diamond Peak overlooking the north shore of Lake Tahoe. I was up in Tahoe over Christmas with my brother and his family for four days.

My brother, who also came skiing with me. Actually, he's a snowboarder now. I was surprised that skiers still seem to predominate at Incline--and not just fogeys like me. There were a lot of kids and adolescents on skis too.

The view from Diamond Peak is spectacular and the weather last Sunday was perfect. On one side you have panoramic views of the lake the whole way down and then at the top you can see into Reno and Carson City.

This is looking back at Diamond Peak the next day from Crystal Bay, where our cabin was.

Here's the living room of the cabin. It was small and rustic but very cozy with the fireplace. That's my nephew Oliver in the foreground

These are some posh cabins near ours. The houses are packed in quite densely and there's no fences marking property lines. With all the pines interspersed I can see how this would just light up in minutes during any sort of forest fire.

Our cabin was on the California side about 100m from the border with Nevada. There are a few casinos there but all are run-down and kitchsy. Here I'm posing in front of the fire place at the CalNeva Resort. The stateline runs right thru their fireplace.

And here's Will poking his finger into the ear of a faux terra cotta warrior, oddly and infrequently placed about as decoration.

The kitschyness extended to our cabin's decoration. This paining was up in my room. I guess it's titled "Bear Club". It's kind of like those paintings of dogs playing poker but with bears and they're on a speed boat.

1971: My mom and grandmother in some seriously fierce dresses on my grandmother's back patio.

Mom had a bunch of my grandmother's slides boxed up and gathering dust. I sent a test box off to this company called ScanCafe which ships them to India, scans them, and then mails you a DVD with the high resolution images. Since the scanning is outsourced to India they're cheaper than anyone else. You have to trust that their logistics chain is solid but it's not like I was going to do anything with these slides. I don't even own a slide viewer.

My grandmother Vivian at her desk as editor and owner of the Dinuba Sentinel, the town's newspaper which my Aunt Diane still owns to this day.

My grandparents, my grandfather Bill Locke died when I was very young, at what I'm guessing is Harvey's in South Lake Tahoe circa 1970.

Sweet! This photo is being used in Wikipedia's article on prostitution to illustrate advertising. The picture shows a pay phone in downtown Sao Paulo that's covered with hooker stickers advertising their services. In London they're called Tart Cards. The photo is from my trip last year. This is almost as cool as getting a book cover :)

Marina del Rey looking towards the mountains in Malibu

I went to LA this weekend to see my brother, dad and some friends. A winter storm had just passed thru making it cold but incredibly clear. From the roof of my dad's apartment building you could see from Mt. Baldy to Catalina. LA is stunning on the few days like this, usually in winter, when the air clears out.

My dad has got great light in his apartment so I had him take some pictures of me with this beard I've grown. I'm not sure if I'll keep it.

Dad suggested I take this photo of him. I think it came out pretty well.

I'm almost done cleaning out my mom's house. She had a lot of stuff, most of which she'd bought or made in the last ten years. Few items from my childhood survived but occasionally I'd come across inconsequential but well-remembered item like the plate above. I'm now very Anti-Stuff so I took this picture before I tossed the plate in the garbage.
