Mona and my legs. Here's a picture fromGay Pride in New York a month ago of my friend Jesse. Since it's vertical I couldn't posted on this blog but I really liked it so I put in on my flickr page.
LA's Union Station from 1939. Actually, between Metrolink, Amtrak and the subway, it gets a respectable number of users.
More Getty Villa. If anyone knows how to turn on RSS feeds in Blogger, please let me know. The fields 'Site Feed Server Path' and 'Site Feed Filename' seem to be key. I feel like I know what they mean but I'm still clueless as to what to put. I'm not sure RSS is ever gonna appeal to the masses but the people who care about it [and you know who you are] seem to be influential, like early Velvet Underground fans.
At the Getty Villa in Malibu. Tickets are hard to come by. I tagged along with some friends who had an extra in their car.
LA's bus-way based Orange Line, inspired by Curitiba. Unlike Curitiba, which densely zoned the route of their bus lines, the Orange line doesn't run straight down Ventura Blvd as it should but thru a light industrial wasteland about a mile north. Nice try. The buses look nice, tho.
The 210 and 134 interchange in Pasadena. It's hard to get good photos of freeway interchanges because you're driving or going too fast as a passenger. You need to find residential streets near the interchange that have their own over/under-passes which provide street parking, pedestrian access and a good view of the interchange. Rhapsodizing about the beauty of Southern California freeways seems to be a well-mined theme so I'm not sure I plan to go terribly out of my way to get shots like this.
El Rincon Criollo in Culver City. Jonathan Gold of the LA Weekly recommends the Lechon Asado. Having stubbornly ordered something else, I can agree with the recommendation.
Me and my friend Matt at Flames Coffee Shop in San Jose where we were able to meet up randomly one recent morning for breakfast. Matt lives in DC now but in another century we attended the same high school. The picture was taken with Matt's camera in a mirror. He's graciously letting me use the image. It's hard to get it centered when you're not looking at the view finder. The Met in NYC has raised their "suggested" donation to $20. I've long given just a buck to hop in and say hi to Juan de Pareja and my other favs. I'm still surprised at how many friends & family regard this behavior as wrong somehow. What strikes me as wrong is when a big and rich institution [$45 million anyone?] manipulates middle class fairness norms.
Dockweiler beach is at the end of the runway for LAX. Massive 747s take off just a few hundred feat above the beach. It's loud and odd and cool.
