In Portugal
I am in Portugal on vacation right now, taking lots of pictures but away from any computer where I could edit them, and so no new pictures until Dec. 7th. Meanwhile, tho, please enjoy these few remainders from New York:
Respectively; pink on black splatter on by the corner store, more great graffiti trucks in SoHo, and a satisfying burger at the Corner Bistro (where I find weekend afternoons around 4pm to be the time with the least line (and thanks to my friend Bryan for showing me that)).
610 Broadway
At Broadway & Houston. I've been watching this building grow up each day when I leave my apartment for work. Before there was a gas station and car wash here and in the winter there would be a line of dirty taxis lined up back to Mott St.
Late Fall in NYC
A few leaves still up, as seen on my walk yesterday thru Tribeca and Battery Park City.
Gherkin
The 41-story Swiss Re Tower in London, designed by Norman Foster and known as the Gherkin, which is a British word for pickle. Lloyds of London
Down the block, Richard Rodger's Lloyds of London building from 1986. Very Bladerunner.
Victoria & Albert
A plaster cast of Trajan's Column from Rome. Why travel when the Queen can bring it to you?
Dale Chihuly installation. Barbican Center
The Barbican Center, perhaps London's most hideous post-war, superblock development. They should call up the Luftwaffe and bomb it all over again.
Back in New York, Finally
Arrived last night after a very comfortable flight on British Airways' Business Class with fully reclinable seats. I'd rather not think about how much this cost. Since I only take pictures on weekends, I'll be posting some remaining London photos for the rest of this week, starting with... Bollywood on the Thames
While walking along Bankside on Sunday I passed by this video shoot for some Bollywood film or music video.
London has been gray and unphotogenic and I've lacked inspiration [altho I did like the presentation of the fruit above]. I'll try to take a few more shots this weekend before coming back to NYC on Monday.
Cambridge I
On Sunday I took the train up [down?] to Cambridge. Very charming. Nice to see the model for so many liberal arts colleges on the east coast.
Still in London
My trip in London has been extended to Nov. 15th, which will be almost 3 weeks. This is the view from the 16th floor of the office I'm in. St. Paul's in the foreground and the London Eye [the enormous, silly ferris wheel] in the background.
Bryan & Lula
Just before I got sent off to London, I had a champagne brunch with my friend Bryan at Intermezzo on 8th & 21st. We enjoyed several mimosas but lamented the demise of our old brunch spot, First, which was unsurpassed in the generosity of their liquor refills. Afterwards Bryan consented to a few photos at the Chelsea Hotel where he was house sitting. Chelsea Hotel
Interior & Exterior shots of the Chelsea Hotel.
British Museum
This is the dome, designed by Norman Foster, put up over the courtyard of the British Museum. Elgin Marbles
The wall texts are really excellent at the British Museum and they've done wonders to clear up the clutter since my childhood visit back in the 1980s. They have a section justifying their posession of the Elgin Marbles [apparently more properly called the Parthenon Sculpture, more on their site]
Me & Marcos
Marcos, a friend from Argentina, has been working in Dublin for the past month. He came over this weekend and we spent a day walking around London together. We both marveled at the coincidences of life that we should see eachother so soon after our visit in Paris two weeks ago. The top photo was at the Tate Modern, looking out at the river, altho we were so heavily back-lit that it was either us or the view exposure-wise, so naturally I chose us.
££££
I like the heft and thickness of one pound coins, altho when you have a bunch it's like a pice of shrapnel in your pocket.
London
I'm in London right now as evidenced by this photo of me in front of St. Paul's Cathedral. I've been brought over here for work but I did get Sunday free, at least.
