I'm in London
Last Tuesday, with about 3 hours notice, I was sent off to London for two weeks on business. This is the first time I've traveled for my current job. It's a small adventure, altho work is work and I'm doing more of it here, hence the recent lack of postings. I'll be putting up some photos this week. Meanwhile, here's a few from last weekend in New York:
From the Noguchi Museum in Queens.
And graffiti nearby in Astoria.
Cool Dan's Birthday
From Cool Dan's 'White Bash' party for his birthday. We all went to Plaid. Jesse & Dan dressed up in white, labor day be damned.
One More from France
Here's Luc next to Canal St. Martin. This was on my small Minolta XG. I forgot had pictures of France on it. Also, Luc has posted lots on his blog from when I was there [scroll down the page about half-way]
Paris - Friends
The irrepresible Jean Denis.
Diego, Pablo, Marcos, Me, Jean Denis.
Jean Denis, Me, Luc, Jean Francois, Diego
Luc and Romain.
Luc.
Jason of NYC a Paris
Diego
At the Louvre.
Paris - views from apartments
From Jean Denis' 6th [really 7th] floor walk-up near Saint Suplice.
From Luc's friend Romain's place in the Marais.
From Erik's gorgeous apartment also near Saint Suplice. That's Marcos, one of my best friends from Argentina who was working in Ireland for a few weeks and was lucky to take a weekend off and meet us in Paris.
Two stairwells; Erik's and Luc's. I felt really lucky this trip that I got to see so many private interiors. It's a different window on a city.
Paris - Large Vistas
It was late afternoon and after a long, cloudy day, the sun broke through for a few moments across the Place de la Concorde.
From the top floor of the Pompidou right at 7pm when the Eiffel Tower lights up.
From the d'Orsay
Paris - Small Things
So much of what makes a place a place are the little details. Above; breakfast at Jean Denis', an overpriced pastry from Pierre Herme, an old Rues de Paris street guide and Erik's spice rack.
Me in Paris
I was in Paris last week, as is evidenced by these photographs of me in front of recognizable landmarks [Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Saint Suplice, and the Orientalism room at the d'Orsay, respectively]. I was there for vacation and to see my friends Jean Denis and Luc. By lucky coincidence the Argentines Marcos, Diego and Pablo were also visiting and I ended up spending a lot of the week speaking Spanish.
More from the Brooklyn Bridge. 7 WTC is nearly topped out. I'm back from Paris. Pictures will be forthcoming.
Just randomly I decided to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge after work (on the 4th, I am a few days behind in the queue). I took the A to High St. and walked towards Manhattan. It was dusk, warm, windy, and the lights of the city were just beginning to shine.
Blue on Red
I am in Paris right now (AZERTY!) but of course I have a queue. Here I am in Williamsburg.
Graffiti in Williamsburg
Williamsburg was my first neighborhood in New York, altho only for two months. I hadn't been back in awhile and I was amazed at the explosion of clubs, shops, bars and restaurants, especially on streets off Bedford.
The Monster 8x10 Camera
Here I am operating my 8x10 camera. It's a Calumet C-1, an old studio camera from the 1950s I picked up in eBay a couple of years ago. I've barely used it just because it's so heavy and hard to use. The results from the 8x10inch negative, however, are stunning.
Cool Dan & Jesse in my Stairwell
I often use the stairwell of my building for photos. The top level, just before the roof has a wide, south facing window that gets a lot of light. On Sunday Jesse and Cool Dan came over and I took pictures of them with four different cameras [digital, polaroid, 4x5 and 8x10]. These were with my Canon Digital Rebel SLR which I used instead of a light meter to test exposure times and also for the instant feedback and ease of sharing. Film is great but digital is addictive like crack.
Union Square Greenmarket
Peppers, beets and egg plant. All from the Union Square Greenmarket on Saturdays. If you like pictures of vegetables, you should check out Moonmilk, the author publishes pictures and scans of produce [scans as in physically puts the greens on a flatbed scanner and runs it thru, the results look quite good].
Morgan, Aaron & Me
On Saturday I went to visit more art galleries in Chelsea with my friends Morgan Friedman and Aaron Holsberg. The photos are from the foyer of the Gagosian gallery, which I've used before for it's great light.
I ♥ NYPL
I've fallen in love with the New York Public Library again. Their website has been hugely improved. you can browse their catalog, see thumbnails of the book cover, request a hold on a book and have it delivered to your local branch. It's like Amazon but free. Eastward to Tartary by Robert Kaplan is an excellent travelogue/reportage about the Balkans, Turkey, the Middle East and the Caucauses; the area of territory once governed by the Ottoman Empire. It was written in 1999, before Sept. 11th and before the 2nd Intifada, yet it's not dated because the book largely deals with the history that shapes and influences those countries today.
