Thomas Locke Hobbs
Hi! Thanks for visiting. I'm an American photographer living in Buenos Aires. These are photos from the blog I kept on my site from 2003 to 2009. I now have redesigned the home page to just show a portfolio of my current work. I also blog at BuenosAiresPhotographer.com where I post my baires snapshots.
Fire Island II
Me and Rebekka at sunrise on Fire Island this weekend. Random links, two interesting pieces on the economics of art theft and kidnapping.
Fire Island I
Cool Dan equipped for the water. I went out to Fire Island this weekend with my friends Jesse, Cool Dan, Rebekka and a few others.
Here's Jesse on the ferry ride over.
Subway
Subways seem to be popping up across the city. There's always the scent of baking bread, altho I think they get the dough shipped to them. The smell isn't quite right. It's probably obvious that I took this picture and the three below it on the same night [Monday, as it were]. I edit the photos and upload them to the site all at once, but I'll stagger out the posts.
Jersey St.
Jersey St. is a small alley that cuts across Lafayette just below Houston. I always see crews filming or fashion shoots there. The cinematic image of New York is a city of alleyways, but in fact they're few and far-between. Dumpsters Behind Puck
There's always some prom, party, or wedding reception going on at the Puck Building. Countless times i've walking by hearing the rented band playing 'YMCA' or 'Play that funky music whiteboy' [surely the bane of wedding bands everywhere]. Behind, on Mulberry St., trucks load and unload, noisy garbage truck grind, dumpsters overflow, and pools of party muck stand in the gutter.
This is the entrance hallway to my building. It's a lot wider and nicer than most tenements. I should research the history of my building to find out why.
Sunblock
I have a random assortment of 45 and 50 SPF sunblock. Even in winter I'm obsessive about putting it on my face.
Sick
I spent the weekend knocked out with some sort of flu. I'm mostly better now. The above picture is 400x400 pixels. Yahoo just upped my storage quota from 50mb to 2gb and I thought I'd pass the savings on to you.
Here are a couple of remaining pictures edited under the old format:
Hard Light
Empty chairs at Samba Sushi
Bling Bling Taxi
I've been seeing more taxis tricked out with bling bling hub-caps and hood ornaments. I approve. Perhaps they'll eventually look like Panamanian Buses. Steam
Before I moved to New York, I thought steam rising out of the street was a movie/tv cliche, not a reality.
mmmm...
Cones, on Bleecker St. serves up Argentine-style gelato. I'm not sure what that means exactly but their stuff tastes exactly like what I used to get in Buenos Aires at Freddo or Persicco. Not only is it the best ice cream in New York but tasting it makes me horribly nostaligic.
Robbers on High Street
My friend Aaron took me out to see Robbers on High Street at the Mercury Lounge on Tuesday night. At first they sounded like another Strokes-clone but the lead singer also plays piano and their songs have more variety. As the San Diego Union Tribune puts it, they make jagged indie guitar rock with pop sensibilities. Not bad for a Tuesday night.
PS1 for the 3rd week in a row
The hipster scene at PS1 proved irresistible. The photos above are from the 3rd floor bathroom. On the plus side I got to run into my friend Steve and friends of his, pictured below
Steve & Mike
Steve
5 Pointz in LIC
Formerly called the Fun Factory, the building across the street from PS1 in Long Island City Queens is even more covered with graffiti than on my last visit in February. Aparently now the building is run by an organization called 5 Pointz. They could use a better website, but here's 5 Pointz's About Page and a gallery of photos. This site of Urban Exploration in New York City has a great gallery of 5 Pointz with higher resolution photos than I'd ever care to put on my server. They also have a many galleries of photos of abandoned, industrial type sites around NYC.
Jones Beach
On Sunday I packed my 50 SPF sunblock and went to the beach. As much as I hate the sun and the sand, it's nice to go about twice a year. On a completely different note, my photographs of Sept. 11, 2001 are now back online.
Steve @ PS1
Saturday I returned to PS1 for the 2nd week in a row to hang out with my friend Steve and his many friends. The weather was Northern California perfect -- dry, cloudy, 70.
Dumb-ocracy
On a utility box down the street from my place. I'll vote this year for the first time since 1996. Another Democrat in New York.
Seba at The Park
Sunday night at the Park with my friend Sebastian who had to leave early to let in his locked-out roommate.
Scissor Sisters @ PS1
The Scissor Sisters played PS1's warm-up party on Saturday afternoon. I'm not wild about outdoor concerts but this was a lot of fun. Bono was in attendance
This year's courtyard is done up with bamboo in parabolic shapes. Jets of mist cool the revelers.
I was joined by my friend Aaron and two friends of his visiting from France, Denis and Cristian. Unfortunately Cristian had to be cropped out of this last photo because he couldn't fit into arbitrarily square format I use on this blog..
Hi. I'm a 33 year-old American currently living in Buenos Aires. Before that I lived in California, Sao Paulo and New York and if you browse through the archives below you can see photos of all those places. Currently I'm posting most of my pictures on BuenosAiresPhotographer.com. I also have an old geocities page with some outdated information but also more photos of Buenos Aires, friends and my 9/11 pictures.
