Currently: Buenos Aires

Last night I had dinner with two friends from Homestead High School in Cupertino, California; Emilie Archambeault and Jason Hakes. We were all band geeks. Emilie and Jason both live in Manhattan now.

Later that same night...

My friend Sam is making the Biggest Mistake of His Life by leaving New York and returning to the Bay Area. He'll be missed. We celebrated his departure at the Hole's $10 all-you-can-drink night.

This is my friend Miraj, also taken at the Gagosian gallery, back in February. My friend Scott said that I have too many buildings, too few people on this blog, so i'm trying to rectify that. The picture came out nice. At 3000x2000 pixels, it looks even better.

Saturday was some gallery hopping in Chelsea with my friend Luc. The bottom picture is from the foyer of the Gagosian Gallery which is like one big light box. It's like my defacto photo studio. At Gago there's this big De Kooning show. There were more security goons than visitors.

Palenque

Jean Denis was my host in Mexico. We traveled from DF down to Palenque together. I know Jean Denis from my days living in Buenos Aires.

Philip Greenspun posted a very high res photo of the animal market in Otavalo, Ecuador

Yaxchilan

From the Yaxchilan ruins in Chiapas, along the border with Guatemala, deep within what was Zapatista territory for awhile. This site has some of the best friezes, the best of which are at the Anthropology Museum in Mexico City.

I'm back in New York now, and I'll only post a few of my pictures. I only got one roll scanned. There were some places in Mexico where you could burn your digital camera memory card onto a CD for a fee. This bodes well for long-term travel with digital cameras. Like cybercafes, there's a developing 'mobility infrastructure' to support digital camera use independent of computers.

A small alebrije wood carving I got in Oaxaca. Alebrijes seem like a typical Mexican artesania but are in fact the creation of a single person, Pedro Linares.

Taxis in Mexico City are Volkswagen Beetles painted green and white. They're called "bochos" [bugs] by the locals. They have kind of a bad reputation for robberies and whatnot but I just think they're so cute. This picture is of a matchbox toy taxi.

Mexico City is big but not the biggest city in the world. I've read estimates of the population anywhere between 16 and 30 million. The actual number seems to be around 20 million and, interesting, the net migration trend is away from the city, as noted in this recent article; Chilangos Fleeing DF.

Random Mexico Notes
- Saturday 4/3 I went to a disco in DF called the Living where Peter Rauhofer was DJ'ing. I flew 5 hours to see something I could see any Saturday night at the Roxy in NYC.

- In Lagunas de Montebello in the state of Chiapas I saw an indigenous family pile out of a new Toyota Corrolla. The women all wore traditional dress and the men had cameras to take everyone's picture. They spoke a language that was not Spanish. In all my travels in Latin America it was the first time I saw such a mixture of modern and indigenous.

- All Bran seems to be very popular. In addition to the regular white box, they have four other colors and even a line of breakfast bars. (FYI, i compulsively eat all bran every day and seek it out when i travel).

- Easter is a great time to witness domestic tourism. Not such a good time to enjoy sites by yourself.

Portraits from DC's National Gallery

I love the 1960's City of Tomorrow, Futurama feel of the Washington DC metro. Some Links:

- More pics: one, two
- The story of the metro's construction
- A cute DC Metro Blogger map

I'm off to Mexico for vacation tomorrow. I'll post a few more DC pics that are in the pipeline and then sparse postings until late April. I'm bringing a film camera to Mexico. I still think digital cameras aren't suitable for trips longer than a weekend [unless i brought my laptop]. I'm also reluctant to flash my $1000 digital camera on the streets of Mexico City.
